ON THE LINGUO-CULTURAL APPROACH TO THE DESCRIPTION OF NEW METAPHORICALLY
MOTIVATED MEANINGS IN EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES

Abstract

Background. Linguo-cultural approach to the description of new metaphorically motivated meanings that are emerging in the modern Russian language allows to reveal to foreign students the implicit aspect of the semantics of Russian vocabulary. Relevancy of the linguo-cultural approach to the description of new metaphorically motivated meanings in educational purposes is based on the fact that the majority of new word meanings is characterized by national and cultural specifics and therefore comprises an implicit, «encoded» aspect of the Russian word semantics for foreign students of philology. The article offers different explication ways of national and cultural connotations which underlie the figurative meanings relevant for native speakers.
Materials and methods. Analysis and comparison of materials from lexicographical sources; component analysis of vocabular meanings; analysis of associative and verbal fields; free association experiment; Russia National Corpus data analysis with the approach of contextual use of vocabulary.
Results. Many semantic neologisms that have emerged at the turn of XXI century contain in their meanings connotations and assessments that reflect the axiological hierarchy of Russian linguoculture however have not been expressed in the dictionary definition of a word. This is why these connotations and assessments need to be revealed in the educational dictionaries oriented at foreign students.
Conclusions. It is the linguocultural approach aimed at discovering the reason of the national and cultural connotation emergence (that are «encoded» for foreign students) which allows to develop ways of revealing the content of new metaphorically motivated meanings in educational purposes.
